One of the best all-purpose hydrosols for all skin conditions, lemon balm’s bounty of benefits above all soothe tension whilst remaining refreshing and delicately stimulating. With its high content of antioxidants that targets cellular renewal and repair, lemon balm is slightly acidic (like human skin) and is pH friendly, useful either as a facial toner or incorporated directly into a cleansing ritual.

This hydrosol is crafted exclusively for Maison/Made by a master artisan and certified Biodynamic® distiller in limited quantities. As part of our Verdant Collection, this hydrosol is a way to directly nurture the Biodynamic® Regenerative movement beyond the boundaries of our Burgundy estate.

Notes from the Master Distiller

"Our hydrosols come from the steam distillation of our medicinal plants. Made in micro batches to ensure only first-choice plants are used, we take great care through each step of the distillation process. 

From the very beginning of the plant's life, through its growth and flowering within a very well draining soil, to the time of harvest, we provide our plants an environment that thoroughly enhances their medicinal qualities, a gift of the Biodynamic® approach to soil and plants.

Involving specific sprays, attention to the quality of the soil, timing of intervention in regards to the moon and other energetic aspects, our goal is to foster a high content of qualitative medicinal constituents. This you will find in the hydrosols we make."

What is a Hydrosol?

There are numerous names for plant waters, but we prefer the term of hydrosol - referring to the French “hydrolat”, the condensed steam from the distillation process. 

They are not simple mists, nor are they simply water with added essential oils. Hydrosols are the result of a distinct steam distillation process and contain the delicate water soluble and volatile molecules of the plant. In fact, a hydrosol is on average three to four times richer in volatile principles than an infusion of the same plant.

They cannot be manufactured synthetically, only through artisanally mastered techniques, utilizing a hand-hammered copper still, clean natural spring water, and a watchful master eye.

Like an exquisite wine, our fine hydrosols are the result of their terroir - the location and method of growing, the precise time of harvest, the exact distillation process and bottling - all of these factors play an essential role. Hydrosols represent the true synergy of herbalism and aromatherapy, blending potent but gentle phytonutrient compounds with heavenly aromatic virtues.

Distillation Process

In the truest sense, our hydrosols contain the complete essence of the plant; the ancient distillation process provides both the water and oil soluble constituents that support and tone the skin. 

Our hydrosols are made with fresh, Biodynamic® plant material distilled within minutes of harvesting to capture the abundant plant compounds and cellular water at a time in their growth cycle when the plant is at its most vital and essential oil production is high. Most hydrosols on the market are a byproduct of essential oil production, making them less potent and less therapeutic. Additionally, for essential oil production, plants are dried prior to distillation, thereby losing many of the water-loving phytonutrients inherent to the plant. In contrast, when distilling for hydrosols it is essential to use the freshly harvested (non-dried) plants for optimal results.

The steam of the local, natural spring water used in our hydrosols softens and lifts the therapeutic aromatic compounds from our plants; then, as the steam cools through the hand-hammered copper still, the collected steam is deposited as hydrosol. Trace elements of the essential oils are also carried into the final solution, providing gentle yet effective whole-plant nutrients to even the most sensitive skin. They are bottled immediately after production to ensure freshness. 

There are many factors a distiller must consider when crafting hydrosols: season, weather, current growth stage of the plants, soil conditions, water quality, still size, length of distillation, temperature, and storage, just to name a few. Every master distiller will have their own specific process, having years or decades of experience with their plants.
