The Story

The Story

Rosemary’s plethora of antioxidants is unmatched, even by its cousins in the Lamiaceae family (Lavender, Peppermint, Lemon Balm, Thyme, et al.). So much so, it is used beyond skincare in food preservation. The trace amounts of essential oil found in this hydrosol deliver the same renewing effect, without compromising sensitivities.

This hydrosol has a multifaceted nature. Excellent as a circulatory and strengthening tonic for hair and scalp. Cleansing and antiseptic, with both calming and stimulating (adaptogenic) properties.

The storied “dew of the sea”, Rosemary is world-renowned as a powerful tonic, dating into antiquity. Wonderfully invigorating and fortifying on skin and hair, the perfume from this humble shrub is refreshingly green with undertones of wood and pepper.

This hydrosol is crafted exclusively for Maison/Made by a master artisan and certified Biodynamic® distiller in limited quantities. Our hydrosols are made with fresh, Biodynamic plant material distilled within minutes of harvesting to capture the abundant plant compounds and cellular water at a time in their growth cycle when the plant is at its most vital and essential oil production is high.

Our hydrosols represent the true synergy of herbalism and aromatherapy, blending potent but gentle phytonutrient compounds with heavenly aromatic virtues.

ROSEMARY

Locally sourced Biodynamic® Rosmarinus officinalis steam-distilled hydrolat

From Seed to Bottle

Our hydrosols are grown and distilled locally on soil tended to by a master Biodynamic gardener with over 30 years of experience growing these botanical waters. From the moment the seeds are sodded, the plants are cared for in a manner that produces an exquisite quality, in an environment that elevates their medicinal caliber – a gift of the Biodynamic® approach to soil and plants.

HOW A HYDROSOL IS BORN

Step 1 Once winter and the last frost have subsided, the plants that become our hydrosols are treated with hand-crafted Biodynamic sprays to bolster fertility and vibrancy, given ideal temperature conditions, and individually inspected for signs of distress.

Step 2 Before the rosemary has begun to flower, sometime in late summer, our master gardener and distiller begins to plan their harvest, knowing from 30 years of experience, the best time to capture the abundant plant compounds and cellular water at a time in their growth cycle when the plant is at its most vital and essential oil production is high.

Step 3 Within minutes of harvesting, the rosemary stalks are placed into a classic copper alembic still. Natural well spring water is heated to create the steam that then passes through the plant material, condensing into hydrosol and filling the greenhouse with its intoxicating spicy aroma.

Step 4 Sterilized jars are filled with newly produced hydrosol and are refrigerated until filled into the very bottles that end up in your hands.

The Result Every step of this process is focused on the details to give you the most decadent hydrosols available. Like an exquisite wine, our fine hydrosols are the result of their terroir - the location and method of growing, the precise time of harvest, and the meticulous distillation and bottling process.

A message from our master distiller

“Our hydrosols come from the steam distillation of our medicinal plants.

Made in micro batches to ensure only first-choice plants are used, we take great care through each step of the distillation process.”

“From the very beginning of the plant’s life, through its growth and flowering within a very well draining soil, to the time of harvest, we provide our plants an environment that thoroughly enhances their medicinal qualities, a gift of the Biodynamic® approach to soil and plants.

Involving specific sprays, attention to the quality of the soil, timing of intervention in regards to the moon and other energetic aspects, our goal is to foster a high content of qualitative medicinal constituents. This you will find in the hydrosols we make.”

All About Hydrosols

Distillate plant waters, while fairly overlooked in modern aromatherapy, have long been affiliated with healing and were in use far before essential oils as we know them today were.

Jardin to Bottle

At Maison/Made we talk frequently about our “jardin to bottle” approach. What we mean by Jardin to Bottle is an acute knowledge of the complete lifecycle of every ingredient in our formulas.
